Flying towards a better tomorrow
All over the world, the Lufthansa Group connects people, cultures, and economies—and that’s exactly what they will carry on doing in the future.
To keep you connected globally, meet business partners face-to-face, and pursue your business, the airline group aims to lead aviation into a more sustainable future. They are continuously implementing a wide range of innovative measures to achieve their ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 and cut their net CO2 emissions in half by 2030, compared to 2019.
Modern fleet
The Lufthansa Group will put around 200 new, more sustainable aircraft into service by 2030. These reduce fuel consumption and thus CO2-emissions by up to 30 percent compared to their predecessors – on every flight.
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)
SAF is a true alternative to fossil fuel and a key technology on the way to carbon-neutral aviation. Compared to fossil fuels, SAF reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 80 per cent. Currently, the most commonly used SAF is produced from biogenic residual materials (Biomass-to-Liquid, BTL). Fats from the food industry (used cooking fats) and industrial waste are used for this, so the production of SAF doesn’t compete with food production.
The Lufthansa Group is also involved in several projects to accelerate the development and industrialisation of the next generation of SAF.
A solution for tomorrow:
The unique Sun-to-Liquid (STL) procedure uses concentrated sunlight to produce carbon-neutral kerosene. Lufthansa Group will be the first in the world to fly with it.
Another promising innovation:
The Power-to-Liquid technology (PTL) uses green electricity, water and CO₂ (from the atmosphere or industry) to create a synthetic crude oil that can be processed into kerosene.
